I found this bit about a wrecker being scrapped at Eugen, OR in late 2016.

https://imgrum.me/media/BMSmBD_j4gQ

Anybody know what crane it was? I think I know but it is only a guess.

Hi
I found this on preserved wreck cranes in North America, I am not sure if this is the one you are looking for?

Thanks for the input but that is not the wrecker in question. To start with the scrapped wrecker was an Industrial Works crane while the one preserved at Brooks is a Bucyrus-Erie. The one scrapped was converted to diesel and the one at Brooks is steam.

I found a couple of sites that had identical info on a Willamette & Pacific crane -

c/n 3010 150T 1914
GN 96204>96015>X1736>BN D159 (5/1973)>North West Rail Museum, Portland, OR (2/9/1988>Willamette & Pacific #X1776 (on loan, stored Albany, OR, 3/2001).

Jim,

That is the crane I assume it to be but since the poster didn't give the number or even which road it belonged to I can't be sure. That's research for you.

Well I got the whole sad story. Somebody at the Portland & Western RR decided to get rid of that hunk of junk without ever checking to see if they owned it. Now the NRHS chapter is out a wrecker.

Industrial Works C/N 3010 150 tons Wrecker Steam (to Diesel) 1914
Great Northern Ry #96204 to #96015 to #X1736
Burlington Northern # D-159 05-73
Pacific NW Chapter NRHS Portland, OR 02-09-88
Willamette & Pacific RR #X1736 (on loan)
Portland & Western RR #X1736 “Dino” (on loan) 2000
(stored at Albany 03-01, Eugene, OR 04-13)
http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/wprr1736.jpg
Scrapped 10-16 https://imgrum.me/media/BMSmBD_j4gQ
(The P&W scrapped the crane without notifying the owner.)

The "sadness" of this story parallels when contractors took out the guard shack in Bay City, Michigan.

Probably not the Northwest Railroad Museum mentioned in an earlier post, which is in Snoqualmie WA, but rather the Pacific NW Chapter NRHS listed here. http://www.pnwc-nrhs.org/calendar.php

It looks like this group is still active, but doesn't list a collection it owns. I live in Portland and am not aware of this group, but that doesn't mean anything.

They list their history here, which includes other equipment besides the cars listed under rolling stock (thanks for finding that) being donated and then disposed of, but neither the crane in question nor any other cranes are listed as ever being part of their collection: http://www.pnwc-nrhs.org/chapter_history.html

" . . . a total of 14 preserved cranes scrapped since 2010".

I guess they weren't very preserved then, were they?

There was a Burro crane scrapped at Danbury Railroad Museum. They had two donated and one got scrapped, which unfortunately included a few parts of the other they still have and want to restore. Exact scrap date unknown but within the past decade.
