Just saw this on Facebook. If you are not on Facebook it is just photos of the pieces of the tug. It is gone. Railroad preservation is a piece of cake compared to marine preservation.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Just for information, here is a page covering the salvage, display, and eventual scrapping of New York Central tug #16, which was on display for many years at Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts:

So, tug 16 was actually no longer tug 16 25 years ago when the above water parts were separated from the hull and machinery leaving just the "husk" of the original. So, was Tug 16 actually scrapped?

I visited tug 16 many years ago at the Cape Cod location. It was a great display. The engine was displayed outside, removed from the hull. It was a single cylinder, maybe tandem compound, engine. It is a shame this tug was lost, but it is the same story over and over again. Unless the vessel is preserved by an organization whose mission is the preservation of the vessel, it is only a matter of time before the vessel becomes life expired for any purpose. All of these steam boats we have lost were recycled into some kind of commercial enterprise, and eventually, either the enterprise quits or the vessel needs further expensive work even for just static display.

Dare I ask?

Not that I know much about NYC marine vessels, but I noticed the tug that is in the Streisand movie, "Funny Girl," is numbered 24. Is this tug boat still in existence? Is there any significance in any one boat over another?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Tim, please go to this site for Thomas Flagg's excellent documentation of New York Central tugboats:

From the roster cited, #24 was the last in service in 1972. Bummer. Probably would have been a fun museum piece.

We have done enough crazy stuff...

NYC 24's wheelhouse is still 100% intact, at Wittes in Staten Island. There was an attempt to save it, but I dont think it ever gained any momentum.

16's parts (wheelhouse, stack, engine and some misc.) are privately held, rotting away in Kingston.
