I have been reading a book given to me by an engineer at Alstrom power (formally ABB and C-E) and it mentions pulverized coal used in firing a locomotive (pulverized coal boilers have been in stationary used since the late 1800's and both Carnot and Diesel used it to power thier internal combustion engines).

Was this the C&O steam turo-electric M-1, or another locomotive that was only a concept test?

There was an experiment conducted jointly by Union Pacific and the Bituminous Coal Institute of a coal-fired gas turbine locomotive. Ostensibly it utilized pulverized coal..

The UP's coal fired turbine project lasted about as long as it's turbine blades. Fly ash form burning coal proved to be highly abrasive. Though the turbine was tested, it was never built into a locomotive.

I beg to differ.

On page 431 of the Second Diesel Spotters Guide (Kalmbach 1973) there's a photo of UP 8080, formerly 80, kitbashed from UP Alco PA-2 607 (cab unit) and a former Great Northern electric hulk. "Sporadic road tests were conducted in 1962 and 1963." The turbine was rated at 5000 hp with 2000 hp available from the PA-2 as well. And yes, it was pretty much a disaster, functionally.

the c&o eng. have the normal stoker. The d&h had a 280 and the germans tried it and the think also the brits. also the steam loco builders built a full size test watertube boiler in 1947 for test but they all had the same problems with flame out and slagup of tubes. I think the best way to fire is a modern spreder stoker or the fulid bed. forget useing the exhaust for draft and use a fan that you can control. that is all. bb

The Lehigh Valley RR had one engine that burned pulverized coal. In 1919 LVRR locomotive 1360 a older 4-6-0 was converted to burn pulverized coal. This was not a LVRR project but that of the Fuller Company out side of Allentown. The Fuller Company made pulverized coal burners for power plants. This locomotive only lasted a short time and this was the only LVRR locomotive that had it on.
