This is somewhat related to railroading. This June, preserved LST 325 (Landing Ship Tank from WW II] will depart Mobile, Alabama, for a trip up the Mississippi River as far as Evansville, Indiana. See the link below for the itinerary and list of ports-o'call.
LSTs were powered by EMD V12-567 engines, except two later ones which had steam power plants. In fact, some railroads scavenged surplus LST engines for their diesel locomotives after the war.
If you recall, LST 325 made national news a couple of years ago when her crew of WW II vets restored and sailed her from Greece back to the U.S.
Now that's a happy preservation story---one which many RR museums can only envy! Some should take notes how this group manages to garner public donations and corporate support.

P.S. Not many folks know that many LSTs were built in "inland shipyards" from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Evansville, Indiana. My father was an officer who served aboard LST 51 and 41 built by Dravo Corp. in Pittsburgh.
P.P.S. A few LSTs actually transported steam locomotives and rail cars to France after the Normandy beach head was secured. A few were rigged to launch Piper scout planes!
