Anyone know when the first trains traveled from San Francisco to Los Angeles?

I assume by the Southern Pacific?

All-rail service via Tehachapi occurred sometime after the completion of the San Fernando tunnel by SP in the late 1870's. Interestingly, SP's direct coast route was not completed until 190?. Until completion of the Coast route, stages bridged the ever closing gap between the north and south ends.

The newly released book entitled "The Southern Pacific in Los Angeles" could probably provide definitive dates.

Ken,

Thank you that's just what I needed to know.

Go to ride the Coast route some day; already have been up the Valley
