In the last few weeks, we have been dealt a powerful blow, one which has the capacity to change what we do with our locomotives forever.

I am here to say that all is not lost. the environment has changed, and we must change with it. Each of us is going to have to determine what is best for our respective operations if we are to continue to run these fantastic locomotives on the main line. I know each and every operator is examining their options, but one thing is certain...the odds have been against us before, and no doubt, we will find a way to weather this storm as well.

Look at all the things which we have defeated on the way to operating our locomotives...Class One indifference or downright hostility, insurance difficulties, car supply, inexperience...all issues we have beaten or are doing battle with.

The 4449 and the BNSF defiantly proved that steam can still ball the jack on the main, and perhaps within this there might be some insight. Mainline steam might be running on restricted signals for now, but be ready to find that clear signal to put the throttle on the roof once again, wherever that clear signal might be.

To make that happen, it's going to require all of us...locomotive operators, car owners, patrons, enthusiasts, and yes, the railroads...to find an equitable solution to the dilemma which faces us. The solution is out there, and with the collective mental and financial power which we possess, we can do it. Remember this...we have been doing the impossible since the 1960's. It's time to do it again...
