As a shortcut for those of us who don't know everything yet, OAHU railway 302 is a Whitcomb 45 ton 300hp diesel electric built in 1944 for the US Navy as #65-00302.

3 foot gauge.

Surprised they shipped it with the bell and headlights still in place.

I'm surprised they couldn't find sources in Hawaii - with the military presence and ship maintenance, heavy industrial repairs shouldn't be this far away.

Don't you think they would have tried to get it done there !! Couldn't be done so it came to us.

folks,
Hawaiian Islands are a long way out in the Pacific Ocean. I am not surprised that they could not re-build that locomotive out there.

I once sent a ship Falls of Clyde volunteer home with a mooring thimble that he could not obtain locally. And that is simply a hunk of galvanized steel.

Ted Miles, retired but still interested

I visited the Society's site a year and a half ago. For part of the visit I had a long-time member as a guide. From our discussion there and on the ride to and from the cruise ship dock, I gather that there is not the heavy industry infrastructure on the islands that we have here on the mainland and the supply chain is dependent on shipping from the mainland.

Visit the Hawaii Railway Society's Facebook page and there is a post that tells how the match up with Wasatch Railroad Contractors occurred. While planning to piecemeal out the work locally, The Society received a single source quote from Wasatch that was in line with the budget.

Well that's scary. Things must have changed since the 1970s out there. It's because they are a long way away that they need to have local capabilities. Key West can get away with it since the mainland isn't far away....... but Hawaii?

The agricultural sector has changed. The last sugar plantation and mill shut down 2-3 years ago. And Pineapples are grown only for local consumption.

I think I did read in a marine industry publication that a commercial floating drydock was being added at Honolulu. So a certain level of civilian marine support is available there.
