Some corrections on LS&I 34 &35. I was the locomotive messenger when IRM move #34 to Union. It was moved in two different weeks in 1971 with a weeks stop over at Green Bay. If I remember I was also set out once in Waukegan? with a hot lead truck axle but not for more than a few days. Locomotive was never stored in Elgin.IL . The cab and tender coal bunker fire happened at Marquette years earlier.
I purchased LS&I 35 at the auction at Marquette a couple of days after Christmas 1984 was a real fire sale I got locomotive for $1400.00 which was $100 more than the locomotives that went to the steel salvage Co. Reason I did not purchase others was they were missing there driver springs and I thought would cost too much to get ready to move.
At the time I was President at IRM and I felt that I should offer #35 to the Museum and IRM purchased the locomotive from me for the same $1400 a few months after my purchase

DD, was I correct that at the time ownership was attributed to Herb Hansen? I won't get into the subsequent issues, now long resolved.

If the LS&I 34 came directly from Marquette to Union, what was the other large loco stored in Elgin along with Commonwealth Edison 5?

Herb Hansen had two 0-6-0s, both stored at Elgin, IL near his laundry: Commonwealth Edison No. 5 and Lehigh & New England No. 207, both are now part of the Illinois Railway Museum collection. Both moved to IRM on their own wheels.

If you care to add a trailing truck you can include the final surviving LS&I locomotive: 2-8-2 #14

Built 1913 for the Duluth & Northern Minnesota Railway, sold to the LS&I in 1919. Sold in 1959(?) to Inland Lime & Stone and used for stationary steaming. Purchased by the DM&IR in 1974ish on behalf of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum (Don Shank did a lot of stuff like that in the early years). Restored 1988-1992, operated 1992-1998, now on display in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.

What is the present location of LS&I #21? I remember reading somewhere that it had been moved to Oak Creek, Wisconsin (a suburb of Milwaukee), is this true?

And in reference to a question in other threads--what became of the booster truck that was on No. 33? What of the truck that was with No. 29?

The LS&I is a long time favorite RR of mine. We've discussed the #32 a couple times here. It's a real shame the #32 didn't survive. I understand the reasoning they use a steamer. But personally, I wish they had blown up an expendable diesel. Even A WW2 Army switcher used abroad or something.

We never did see that photo from the AFB museum of the #32 being blown to bits that supposedly existed??? One of the members here was going to look through their collection but nothing more was ever heard.

We need some kind of proof of #32 being scrapped or blown up to put that enduring mystery to bed for good.

While I am not the member who was going to look through the museum's collection, I did email the Air Force Armament Museum and they do not have the photo.

Thanks to Brian (ChooChooDude), I got a response to an inquiry on the current status of USATC 611 (S-160 with Franklin rotary poppet valve gear). As it turns out, the T1 trust has been in contact with Bill Miller Equipment Sales (current owner of the 611) in regard to that valve gear, and Brian referred me to a page on the T1 Trust about this contact. On the T1 page are some photos of the 611 in 2014, and one of them also shows the locomotive with the original tender from LS&! 34 (now Western Maryland Scenic 734).

LS&I #21 was sold to a private owner in 2004. It is listed as being restored in Augusta, Wisconsin. Not sure if it is a cosmetic restoration or a return to operation.

Someone reported it being at an industrial site in Oak Creek, Wisconsin back in February.
