In the conclusion of Bob Hughes' transcontinental rail trip, he rides the eastbound California Zephyr to Chicago in the final days of long distance train travel. Less than a year after his 1969 adventure, the California Zephyr made its farewell run. There was truly No Time to Waste.

I rode the CZ in 1968 while on transfer orders in the Army. The Early Bird dinner was perfect, both in food and price (on GI pay).

Looks like your train had an extra D&RGW coach for the SLC-DEN segment and two extra sleepers (SP and is it a CB&Q 6-6-4?) The extra cars are ahead of the regular consist because they're not wired for the CZ's sound system. Wonder if they're a tour group.
