Over 80 years ago the New York, Westchester & Boston Railway was abandoned as an asset to the City of New York. Overtime much of the right of way has been subsequently sold off and given to private development. Just 3 years ago the historic Mt Vernon Station was torn down despite objections of the public.

Today I ask our New York enthusiasts if they would consider the preservation of yet another historic NYW&B property. The Kingsbridge station site is in need of salvation as it has sat deteriorating since the railway's closure. Vegetation has since overtaken the ROW and the station's once elegant superstructure is no more.

I have spoken with Westchester County officials on the matter with positive feedback. The property owner himself is open to the idea of a future museum site and I would like to take the opportunity to reach out to you personally. If you are interested in organizing a restoration effort please let me know. If you have any good advice don't hesitate to tell me. Thank you for your time folks!

I’m curious, if the “superstructure” is gone, what do you wish to restore? It sounds like it is an empty lot.

I should clarify my comments. The platforms, station entrances and tunnels are intact. A portion of the station building (overhang) was demolished sometime between 1952 and 1967. I am organizing an effort to re-build the main station building to function as a museum and clear the ROW for parkland.

The Kingsbridge NYW&B station is a unique location for such a museum as the MTA's #5 subway (former NYW&B Harlem River Line) all but terminates at the old Kingsbridge location.

Are you envisioning turning what is left of the entombed station portion into said museum? Or building above it where the ROW was?

Best of luck!

In preliminary talks with the property owner we believe the best course of action is to stabilize the existing station structure and work from there. The heavy vegetation atop the ROW has caused cracks to permeate in the concrete, this is a priority safety concern. I am in the works for organizing a work session to start a cleanup, I will send out a general notice on social media when that is confirmed.

Cameron,

What is the name or link to the social media group for this effort?

I'm being general (Facebook). In addition to my own efforts I've just learned that local community leaders have previously created a group of their own doing. I am trying to reach out to these local activists and see if there is a positive consensus to work together on this project.
