BAR to CNJ

ex-Bangor & Aroostook F3, dressed as Jersey Central unit. Photo must have been taken just after painting, several years ago. Pretty good job of replication, in my opinion.

After looking at those F-3's for a while, especially after the paint weathered a little, you soon see why CNJ went to the green-with-gold stripes paint scheme!

One remaining BAR F3 still is protected as an "archive" piece in the Derby Shops of the new Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railroad (ex-BAR). The unit (#49) is a hybrid, made years ago from a wreck. The last BAR BL2 is indoors at the Cole Land Transportation Museum, in Bangor, Maine. Both units are in their original color schemes.

Actually there are 3 other BAR BL-2's in existence besides the one in Bangor. One is at the Stourbridge tourist railroad in Pennsylvania, and two others are at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin

Plus the WM one at Baltimore and the Monon one at the Kentucky RR Museum. That's 6 survivors out of a production run of 52 - not bad at all! It's still a neat looking engine.

Both WM units still exist. The 82 is in service on the West Virginia Central but currently in the CSX Huntington, WV shop for wheel and draft gear work. It is owned by the state of West Virginia.

The BL-2 count does point out that facet of human nature that makes us collect the "freaks" while the routine pieces go bye-bye.

7 BL-2's lived to see the new millenium, but just one E7A!
