And - they're still getting mainstream press on 4014: https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/big- ... index.html. Getting closer to the east. Wonder how much that impacts recognition.

Awful lot of foam flying around here. Speculation is all we have at this point.

With two operating locomotives and a small steam crew available for their care and feeding something will have to give. Either the resources have to grow some or excursions have to be curtailed some for 3985 to see life again. I suspect that the locomotive will indeed be run through its 1472. We just need to be patient and see what transpires.

It should be noted that recent work on trackage near the Cheyenne roundhouse severed the whisker tracks, essentially landlocking #3985, the E9 trio, and anything else that is in the roundhouse. Those tracks would/will need to be replaced before anything is moved out of the roundhouse.

I am guessing that they will be replaced?

Try to keep your imagination in check. It's unfounded speculation like that, that are behind most of the wild rumors surrounding UP Steam.

I understand that the contaminated soil under the tracks was being remediated. I would bet $0.05 that the the track will be replaced when the work is done.

What contaminated the soil? Oil and grease from the locomotives?

Over the last 80 or 90 years, a few things might have dripped off here and there.

Can a moderator just lock this thread already? I am getting tired of reading all of the anti-UP speculation. Let's all just be grateful that they brought a Big Boy back to life.

Not sure if anything negative or extreme enough has been said here to warrant locking the thread, however this really feels like a discussion that belongs in the Railfanning forum.

Here is what the ground typically looks like around a large railroad shop:

Contaminants may include (and are not limited to) diesel fuel, diesel engine lube oil, traction motor grease, silica sand, asbestos, heavy fuel oil, coal, coal ash (mercury), and diesel engine cooling system corrosion inhibitors (hexavalent chromium).

FWIW, here is a September 20, 2010 article in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that described a 1989 spill of 8,000 gallons of tetrachloroethylene "from a tanker car that was on the turntable at the rail yard":
Local chemical contamination cleanup started

Who’s not thankful for the Big Boy?

This seems to be very on topic. At one point UP said the Challenger would be restored after the Big Boy. Now it appears that’s been delayed. Seems like a fair topic to discuss.

As I’ve said, I would love to see the Challenger back in operation, but I also see the business sense in not restoring it right now.

What's to discuss? It's UP's program and their decision. None of us here have any right to presume to know their business better than they do.

But...But that implies they don't run the heritage program just to make Railfans happy. And we all know Railfans know best how up should spend its money.

Scarcasm aside.....I'll third That
