Is there an ACF archive out there (much like the Pullman archive at IRM)? I'm trying to find information and builder's photos (particularly of the interior) of a specific cafe/lounge that was built in 1949.

Any help is appreciated.

Yes - Try contacting the Barriger Library (St. Louis Mercantile Library Assn) at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where part of the AC&F archives is located.

ACF split up their donations. The Barriger Railroad Library, which is part of the Mercantile Library and located on the campus of the University of Missouri - St. Louis, has the lot books and photo collection. The Museum of Transportation was given drawings. We received 30,000 some years ago which have been sorted and cataloged. In the past year we have been given about 200,000 more drawings, which we have gotten off ACF property and started to catalog. We can only estimate the number until we have them all cataloged, which will take some years to complete. We gladly make copies of the cataloged drawings available, but need to have the original owner identified, along with the type of car and date of construction. Car numbers or names do not help, but lot numbers do, if known. Few drawings date before 1930, and the most recent are about 1980. The collection is not complete and we do not know where missing ones may have gone. If we haven't cataloged the drawings you may need the Barriger Library's lot books may give us the drawing numbers to look for. The numbering system they used was based on the size of the drawing, not the subject or date, so finding the lot number is crucial, and we can help with the lists we have. It sounds as if you are looking for a Union Pacific 5000 series car. A floor plan and 3 photos (2 interior photos) are on page 564 of the 1953 Car Builder's Cyclopedia, which might be fairly easy to find. C&NW had cars from the same order.
