Anyone see this program this morning? Humorist Bill Geist did a segment on a convention of historic vacuum cleaner collectors in Indiana. As might be expected, a bit of fun was poked at them, especially the vacuuming contests, which actually measured the amount of dirt left behind on the competition rug. Some participants even professed to have been vacuum cleaner nuts since they were two years old. Finally, a group that gets less respect than us!!!

(Please don't take my comments here wrong, I'm all for any type of industrial / mechanical preservation, but I can't let this go.... Just poking a little fun at both us & them.)

There are some scary similarities in the preservation of vacuums and steam locomotives.

Both have wheels.

Both use mostly metal construction.

Both had many builders.

Both make a loud noise.

In many cases both have headlights.

I wonder if those guys get together and have slide shows? Do you think they have a photo line when they run their races? Do you think the government at some point will start inspections? "I'm sorry sir you 1936 Hoover has too many hours on the current bag. You will need a new bag and another inspection before any more demonstrations. We don't want to risk a bag breaking in front of a crowd and all the associated allergy problems. It would be a black eye for the hobby."
