Recently saw a photo of a steel center cupola caboose located at the Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum located in Newton, North Carolina. The standard gauge caboose is nicely restored and lettered as Norfolk Southern #376. The lettering style may be of the type that the ORIGINAL Norfolk Southern used, however I can't find any notes on their internet sites that state that the caboose is in fact an ORIGINAL Norfolk Southern car, or if it is just lettered as such and the caboose is actually from some other railroad. Anyone know?

Les, I can't access the museum's website now, but at one time, there was an original NS caboose in not-far-away Lincolnton, NC. It was offered for sale on railswap.org, it wouldn't surprise me if the Lincolnton caboose is now with this museum. Original railswap ad:

That certainly is the same style of caboose as the photo I saw of NS #376. And if it really IS the same caboose, the group has really done a wonderful job of restoring it. Thanks for the reference to the railswap photo.

Thanks for the info on 376, and also on 368 and 375. It's great to see that the OLD Norfolk Southern is being remembered. I wouldn't think too much else from the original Norfolk Southern is still around.

Les-the North Carolina Transportation Museum has an original NS Baldwin road switcher, as well as one other piece of NS rolling stock (can't remember off the top of my head).

I can confirm that Norfolk Southern caboose #376 at the SE Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum is in fact the original NS 376, and yes, is the same caboose that languished the last 40 years in nearby Lincolnton. As a matter of fact, we just installed new windows in her this past weekend.

We opted to go with the early red scheme since a gray NS caboose already exists at NCTM in Spencer, and a red NS caboose in the "Tarwheel" scheme was recently restored in eastern NC. That way, the 3 major schemes of this neat line are represented.
