Very saddening, especially considering I was in Hamburg the day before the first news article came out. I have faith they'll eventually recover. Would anyone happen to have a partial or full list of the equipment vandalized?

As I have stated before, the cost of the material (copper) is pretty small compared to the cost of labor. Jack up the unit, pull the trucks out, take apart the combos, send the motors out for new leads, replace the leads under the unit, and reassemble. Plus trucking costs, shipping the motors out and back. Unfortunately the police like to write up reports based just on the value of the copper.

As to marking the parts, I remember hearing a story, years ago, about Greyhound marking bus tires with their name. If you saw one on a truck it was most likely stolen. I do know that some people engrave bells and air horns with unique ID markings.

I have seen many tourist railroads start go fund me pages from a wide variety of reasons including arson, vandalism, theft, hard ships, and other problems. These are not small amounts. Many are in the $15,000-$50,000 range. The far majority of them meet their goal and quite often bring double what their goal was. A good deal of locomotives and rolling stock has been saved by Go fund me so I would strongly suggest the museum start a page. Nothing to lose and everything to gain at this point.
