Thanks for all the tips. I feel more comfortable doing this now. We’ll need a type B regulator since the field is grounded at the negative brush terminal the same as old Ford trucks and cars. We’re gonna go solid state so there is nothing mechanical to maintain, adjust or wear out. The prices aren’t much different. Since the load on the battery won’t be much, we’ll use one deep cycle marine battery to get going.

The next step will be to put the gen on the bench and do a thorough clean, test, lube & paint, reflash the field and then see how well it works at our low speeds. I have a 1951 manual found online but it doesn’t give any performance specs other than max volts & amps.
