Here's a couple of exterior shots of latest project I've been lucky enough to be a very small part of, the Shenango from the Capitol Limited has been saved and refurbished to be put back into service.

From the owner:
"Shenango" is owned and operated by AMC Rail located in Ohio. AMC purchased, saved the car from being scrapped and began extensive repairs to return the car to first class excursion service mid 2019. Mechanical, electrical, and cosmetic repairs will continue into the future.

AMC also owns the Baltimore and Ohio tail car "Wawasee" used on the famed Capital Limited that they intend to paint in the same color scheme as time and money permits.

The car will be used in excursion and lease service.

I'd also like to thank the Baltimore & Ohio Historical Society for providing the needed paint and stenciling diagrams.

For those keeping score at home, Shenango is B&O 7046, a 10 Roomette, 6 Double Bedroom sleeping car built by P-S in 1950 to Plan 4167, a C&O-NKP design, with the 6 bedrooms in the middle and 5 roomettes at each end. This gave the more expensive rooms the better ride.

C&O had ordered 75 of these cars but realized it had ordered far more cars than it could use and B&O took 10 of them early enough P-S could substitute regular steel for stainless sheathing below the windows.

Wawasee is a 5 Double Bedroom-Lounge Observation car built by P-S for C&O in 1950 to Plan 4165 and sold to B&O in 1951 as B&O 7501, where it either graced the end of the Capitol Limited or operated mid-train on the Ambassador. Wawasee has the stainless sheathing below the windows and was on the hind end of B&O 6, the final B&O Capitol Limited from Chicago, arriving Baltimore May 1, 1971.

This is a very respectable rescue and recovery for this car. A good transitional situation, especially how she was rode rough and put away wet by RBBB.

Sold by B&O directly to Ringling Bros sometime around 1970. Then sold to CVSR in the mid '90s. Not sure when AMC picked it up.

[EDIT] A few corrections: Sold to RBBX in 1969, used as private car #156 in the Blue Train. Sold to CVSR in 1993 and was converted to a concession car. I think AMC bought it within the last year but don't quote me on that.

Curiously, the DL&W had a 10-6 sleeper named Chenango built by ACF in 1949 to Plan 9008. 9008 cars had the conventional 10-6 layout with the roomettes at one end and the bedrooms at the other.

3 of the DL&W Pullmans were in a Hoboken-Chicago pool with 3 NKP 10-6 cars of Plan 4167a, similar to B&O's Shenango. Two sets of trains were involved, one of which had the sleeper going West to Buffalo on the Phoebe Snow. In commemoration of this ELDCPS has NKP 211 City of Lima in its collection. Erie, DL&W-NKP and EL are not PRR or NYC. It took 3 cars to provide a daily NY-Chicago and return service. Thus 6 cars = 2 sets of trains.

Chenango NY is near Binghamton on the DL&W; Shenango PA is near New Castle on the B&O. Both may be from the Oneida language meaning "large bull-thistle."

B&O 7048 Tygart is at the B&O Museum in Baltimore. It had come from Chicago in the last B&O 6 Capitol Limited and went directly to the Museum.
NKP 210 City of Findlay is the Monticello Railway Museum as IC 3531 Council Bluffs. Both 210 and 211 were sold to IC in 1965.

To clarify, as noted this former 10-6 sleeper is a former Ringling Bros Circus car that was later sold to the Cuyahoga Valley and completely gutted for use on their trains. Not sure off hand if it was used as a table car or a lounge but you get the idea. The current owners saved the car after retirement by CVSRR and it looks like it is now in a similar table car or lounge configuration. It's good to see the exterior restored to the original B&O colors by the new owners. I look forward to seeing the Wawasee restored to the same B&O scheme in the near future.
