Last time I saw the engine room of the B&O 50 it had a lot of deterioration due to water leaks in the roof.

My guess is that it’s one of those things on the list of “eventual major cosmetic projects” for the MOT, included in there along with things like the Eddie Clock, and C&NW 1015 (the museum’s first locomotive, and the only surviving C&NW locomotive with a trailing truck).

Great article on the restoration from Railfan and Railroad. Also includes a great photograph of 51 if you haven’t seen it in better detail yet.

I can't believe what a difference the correctly replicated pilot makes to the look of the locomotive, not to mention the chrome applique on the nose. Amazing work!

(Too bad we can't get PRR E7 #5901 parked on the next track for a photo op.)

Wow. This is probably the best demonstration of the ideal version of early diesel streamlining in the country, if not the world....... struck by how different the reality was by the mid 1960s and concern about visitors scratching it or getting it dirty. Kudos.

This is an amazing piece of work, absolutely superb in every way. The B&O Museum and the restoration crew have a LOT to be proud of here.

And that's a hell of a serial number....

I was told on Friday that the next project for the shop is a repaint of CNJ No. 1000. It would be cool to pose it with No. 51 at some point.

That's the lead into the round house.

I know it's a long shot to have the unit run, but is there any word as to CNJ 1000's condition, mechanically or cosmetically?

Photos and restoration are stunning.

Not wanting to nitpick, but I figure this would be the right place to ask: wouldn't the red around the fuel filler cap and levels be a more modern feature?

A somewhat related question: When was the Emergency Fuel Cutoff (EFCO) button first installed on the lower part of each side of a D-E locomotive? For anyone who doesn't know, there is also just about always one high on the back wall of the cab as well. By my training, that was the usual way we shut them down. Most D-E locomotives can also be shut down by pulling out on the throttle handle and pushing it further forward to "engine off".

Here's how she looked back in 2010 (Sheesh, I thought I just took that pic, lol):
(Looked pretty good to me. I was told when the No. 51 was taken to be restored, that C&O 4-6-4 #490 was next... hopefully, she'll be next after the CNJ box cab, with the AFT as soon as possible)

And back in 1955 (with "friends" - I wonder which B&O unit that is?)

Looks to be an E6:

Yes,, if you were in the cab at the time.

Probably after a few of them, sitting around unattended, caught fire.

Would you want to climb into the cab to pull the EFCO line? Or would you rather do the same thing from the ground?
