I'm glad somebody in China is alert to the value or craving for live steam here in the west. $150,000 doesn't seen too out of line for an operable locomotive with delivery included. What would it take to bring such locos up to FRA standards?

I think that David Conrad and others in Essex, Connecticut may prefer that E-bay does not infringe on their sales agreements about Chinese engines.

since coal is still king in China they may yet go back to building Chinese Steam engines.

Interesting, but given Ted's warning about extant sales agreements with the PRC, the "red flag" goes up with me. I'd be concerned about this being some sort of scam.

I believe this seller may be legit. I did a quick search of the seller name which is Multipower International and came up with these results from Trainweb.org.

Yes, Multipower has been around for over a decade. I believe they are the official U.S. distributor for Chinese Steam. I don't know whether they are presently sole distributors or competitors with Mr. Conrad. He steps in here from time-to-time, perhaps he will respond.

I *DO* know (from contemporary stories in the press) that Mr. Conrad was deeply involved in the manufacture of the locomotives he was instrumental in importing, to ensure their compliance with U.S. regulations. My guess is the locos for sale were not built to these modified specifications. So I would expect that compliance costs, insurance costs, or the costs of obtaining some sort of operating waiver would need to be considered as part of the overall business case.

He ought to skip EBAY, walmart's pretty good as a sales agent for the "Peoples" Republic of China

Given the vast difference between "working order" and "compliant" perhaps the market he is trying to reach with the Ebay offer isn't us but private owners? If so, maybe something smaller would have a wider appeal for backyard railroads. There were some narow gage logging and mining engines in China.....not to mention AliShan Shays.

I wonder if the Mitsubishi built RM 4-6-2s would be more easily made compliant than the Chinese built power?
