Remaining CF7's?

We have ex-ATSF 2571 at the Oklahoma Railway Museum, it's painted in yellow & blue warbonnet colors. It's currently out of service waiting for (I think) radiator repairs. We got it from BNSF/LAJ back in 2012.

There was a group from Cleburne TX on facebook looking for a CF-7 for display only, to commemorate the Cleburne shop's history, a few months back, and I believe they were referred to MTM, but I don't know if it worked out.

Florida Central/ Midland/ Northern still has at least 2, the 48 and the 50 both still operational.

Heart of the Heartlands has a CF7 painted in SouthEast Kansas RR colors. It was one of the first locomotives that Watco started with many years ago. It is fully repainted in it SEK paint scheme but I do not believe it is operable. Museum is located in South East Kansas in a very small town of Carona. Nice museum to visit. I don't know what ATSF loco it was before being purchased by SEKRR.

I believe there is one at Crewe, Va Railroad Museum repainted as an N&W unit and numbered 2185.

Totally agreed! I cringed when I saw it.

Like I said, those geeps fake people out pretty regularly. There are two reliable CF7 giveaways: the pug nose and the channel cut out in the side sill. Those are what you've gotta watch for.

The CF7 frames are actually a fabricated I-beam with a depressed center that was done in-house to replace the F-unit truss structure. On early units it was very visible. About 2 years into the program, it was discovered that there were real sag structural issues around the ends and truss of the ends and truck area. To combat that, additional side reinforcement plates were welded on the outside of the I beam over both truck ends. That 'closed frame' became standard, and rather rapidly the earlier production was retrofitted. None of the 'open frame' units remained.

I've seen one odd picture with only one end of a CF7 done, have no idea why.

There were also accusations (in the CF7 book) that the girder steel spec went to a milder steel for a period of time, and those were the units that ended up with 'nose droop' and later frame failures.
