Something just seems off about #8 to me

Is the stack just abnormally small? Or are the domes abnormally large for a loco of that size.

I thought the same thing, and not because of the flag. She seems a bit squat, like low profile. Maybe it's the large domes and headlight, and/or maybe the cab is a bit lower than it might be. I can't pinpoint it, but it seems odd somehow.

#8 was built as an industrial locomotive for use at Michigan Alkali's Alpena, Michigan quarry and was later used at Huron Portland Cement in Alpena. A low profile for tight clearances was likely part of its original design specs due to where it was intended to operate.

A copy of its builders photo is in the RR Museum of PA collection:

A photo of it in its later years at Huron Cement can be found here:

Given the date, the CR unit would most likely have been 61xx (38?). At the time all CR 6-axle units were 6xxx series numbered and it's a widecab GE so 6138 would make for an appropriate number.

Nice! I didn’t realize the 8 ever ran at the village.

It didn't, at least not in official train service. The photo of it with cars was when it arrived in 1979 under its own power (barely). It was cosmetically restored and its boiler was re-certified with the state in the early 1990s so it could be used in stationary service to supply steam to the Detroit River Tunnel crane for the Railroad Days event.

Most of the funding during its D&M restoration (after it was purchased out of a scrapyard) went into boiler work. Aside from the boiler, it is a very tired locomotive in need of some heavy frame repairs and likely most other mechanical work that could be done on a locomotive.

Oh that makes sense! I was wondering why I hadn’t seen any old photos of it operating at the village.

What Dave & Bob said. Got to be a lower loading gauge for some reason. I've seen steel mill lokeys with the same look to them.
