I'm admittedly a little shocked (maybe I shouldn't be) that with the announcement coming out of Altoona, with fresh blood and big names backing the project, that there are more nay-saying "newbies" coming in here than with other threads recently. Normally there's one or two people who have negative things to say in most threads (different people each time) but they seem to be in abundance here. What will it take for the nay-saying to stop about this locomotive? Sheesh. I bet once it's completed and running, there will be more negativity and nay-saying about where it runs or what brand of paint it has or how many chimes the whistle has. If you don't have anything nice to say, shut the heck up. UGH.

Rant over. (for now)

While I understand the radio silence from the new team leading up to this announcement (as they had lots of factors regarding the feasibility and decisions on how to proceed with the project), I do hope they will provide semi-regular updates moving forward.

Even it they aren't restoration updates, I would like to see fundraising updates. Seeing the progress makes me feel better about where my donation is going. I have full faith in the team, but as everyone knows, it inevitably comes down to money.

(Whether you are a fan of the project or not) The T1 Trust group does a good job of keeping people informed on fundraising. Same can be said for the East Broad Top revival.

I think you can count on it.

That is much needed and will help immeasurably after years of mismanagement and waste.

Quote:
“The ultrasonic thickness survey revealed that the cylindrical boiler barrel will be almost entirely reusable, save for common, minor repair work,” Ward said. “The firebox, however, will require substantial repair. Many of the firebox sheets will be replaced with new steel material, and in some key areas, there will be modifications to the stay bolt pattern. These repairs will allow for the safe, reliable operation of the original boiler for years to come.”

There are some more good chunks of info in this article.

While the boiler/firebox will be the majority of the work in this restoration, I wonder what other task or pieces will need a significant amount of attention.

Can we hope they undo the post war "beauty treatment"? :-)

No doubt it will receive a thorough going-over of its running gear.
Might get 4501 style upgrades like babbit bearings, temp monitors on the bearings, aux lub reservoirs, Roller bearing lead/trailing truck conversion.
Maybe it needs new brass on the rods, piston liners or rings. Hard to say.

I think the answer of "upgrades" would be pretty certain if NS was still doing their 21st century program.

Might as well leave it in pieces if they don't undo the post-war "beauty treatment"! ;)

Pre-war appearance or bust!!!

All joking aside, I think that it would be fitting to have 1361 be in the pre-war appearance since 3750 is most-likely forever going to be in the post-war appearance. They would compliment each other nicely in that way.

The museum has been clear in its press releases that 1361 will remain as she appeared in commuter service at the end of steam on the NY&LB, which makes sense if the plan is to create a historically correct, all-PRR trainset.

Purely speculation (which is horribly dangerous, especially when talking about 1361), but I can think of only one set of PRR P70 coaches running around, and they happen to be postwar rebuilds to P70fR, albeit in their 1960s configuration (balloon roof).

The museum has a few other cars of its own to add/remove from such a trainset.

I don't know, I like the 'modern' look better. But whatever they do, I'm fine with it.
What's up with the extra set of marker lamps on the pilot deck, though? I don't think I've ever seen that before.

To be pedantic, the as-built appearance of 1361 looks like it belongs in the late 1800s:

1361 at Washington, DC in 1921:

Note wooden pilot, oil-style box headlight, piston tail rods, single guide crossroads no power reverse, small tender.

1361 at East St. Louis c.1939 (the 'pre-war' look)

The post-war configuration is the version she last ran in.

I actually don’t know the set of P70s to which you refer, might you elucidate that for me?
