Yes it is normal. Don't grasp the crank between thumb and forefinger, wrap thumb and fingers around crank together.

So we all had a blast running the speeder last Sunday but now more questions arise. Is steam comming out the radiator normal or the indicative of a problem? Also how worried should I be about kick back from the crank I hear you're supposed to crank it a certain way so you don't get injured.

That is not a radiator, its a condenser There should be a short tube on the side of the condenser. Most operators add a length of rubber tube to get the steam to drop out down below the deck of the car. Most of the steam will condense and will go back to water to cool your motor. Some escapes. Do check your water level if you are running slow or after you have run flat out for many miles. The water will boil off. Everyone of these engines drinks water a bit differently so until you know how much your car uses keep a gallon on hand.

The crank will break your wrist or fingers if you are not careful. I know of several operators that have been in the hobby for many years that have gotten hurt. Most recently one broke a wrist when the starting crank got stuck and came back around and hit him.

It appears to have a fuel leak wonderful. What I assume is the Builder's plate has been painted over so that's going to make it fun to figure out more about it. Also thinking of bringing up some kind of Bell to use the warning device. Yelling train horn noises to indicate starting forward or reverse isn't ideal or professional.

Only diesels are designed with fuel leaks built in. Advice: if you want a new fuel tank made, call it a water tank and it will be cheaper. J C Whitney has some 12 volt horns cheap that along with a battery will solve your noisemaking problems.

Well now we have a coolent leak.

It does not use *coolant*. It uses plain water, and the cylinder cools by boiling the water.

Water is a consumable. The condenser on top is trying to re-condense some of that water, and that may work at speed, but slower or running backwards not so much. The water jacket is an open system that runs at a total loss. You need to add water often. You also need to drain the water anytime freeze is a risk. Of course it's boiling hot.

If the teakettle top pipe is flowing steam, do not open the water jacket cap. There is *almost* no pressure in there, but there's enough to splash boiling water on your hand.

Draining using the bottom valve should be done regularly enough that the bottom valve does not silt up with condensed minerals. Don't do it "hot", wait a bit for the engine to cool.

Using coolant does a couple of bad things: #1 it raises the boiling temperature considerably, making it run hot; and #2 it makes it drool valuable (well, not in this vehicle) antifreeze out the vent tube, which will then poison pets.

So pull it outta there and put it in something that uses antifreeze.

Antifreeze also leads to the delusion that it's a closed system that doesn't need refilling, which would lead to failure to add water, which would lead to run-dry, which would lead to engine failure.
