Some time ago, we posted a late-1950s photo of this 4-8-4 looking a little disheveled. Here it is today on display in Ottawa. No it doesn't run, but in about as good a shape cosmetically as it could be. Others should be so lucky.

My pictures from the museum Ottawa came out terrible, went there a few years ago.

If I remember correctly, the cab of 6400 is kept locked and is unlocked for tours. It has the most intact cab of the engines there in the main hall.

6400 is in the best shape of all the locomotives in the hall. The cab has been off limits to the public unlike the other locomotives next to it.
Just a side note, 6400 was one of the locomotives that pulled the 1939 Royal Train. As a result it was painted royal blue for the occassion. You will find a picture of it in blue and a little history of the locomotive at the link below...

Bob- RyPN published a brief that I submitted concerning the collection at the Museum of Science and Technology, in Ottawa. submitted just a few weeks ago. The Hall of Locomotives is a fantastic place to reminice the year of 1960 in Canada. 6400 is the best preserved loco of the lot, and yes, it is kept locked except for tours with a guide. The other locos in the Hall look great too, but the cabs have been stripped of brass by vandals disguised as Museum visitors. Those locos include CPR 2853, a Royal Hudson, CPR #3100, one of two 4-8-4's that ran on the railway, and CPR 4-6-0, #923. Outdoors is CNR 4-8-4, #6200, but missing many parts despite an immaculate paint job. Most of the parts are stored or have gone to maintain other restorations.
Any railfan going to Montreal's ExpoRail should consider the additional 100 miles to Ottawa as an extension of the trip. It's a fine exhibit. See the posted Brief for information about the stored C-Liner.

The Hudson is actually CPR# 2858 and the 10 wheeler is CPR # 926

Of note is the fact that the locomotive hall used to house two other CNR steam loco's 4-6-4 # 5700 (actually 5702) now in St Thomas, Ont and 2-6-0 # 713 now at the Exporail in Montreal plus the old Stelco 0-6-0 switcher # 40 which can be found in Lindsay,Ont. The space was needed for staging/coatracks for bus load visitors and offices on a newly created second floor.

Christmas time is often a good time for tours that include the cab of 6400. Years ago they used to operate a small gage steam loco on elevated tracks at the same time. Can't say what happens now.

Here is a link to the Museum website to see what events are planned.

Enjoy.

5702 is at the Canadian Railway Museum in Delson, Quebec. The Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas has 5703, now 5700.

Ex-CPR Pacific 1201 also used to be in the hall until it was pulled out for excursion service several years ago. It is now in long term storage
in a warehouse around back of the museum it used to be displayed in.
