The background discussion on the preservation of collections deserves a separate discussion, it is a significant matter in the hobby and industry.

The fact that an organization has the word "Historical" in their title and the word "Preservation" in their slogan doesn't necessarily indicate they are about the preservation of history. That might have been the case when they were formed, but somewhere as the years passed, other things might have become more important. Frankly speaking from experience gained in placement of collections of many industry insiders, some of the biggest outfits are the least likely to answer the phone or return an e-mail when the relatives are looking to donate a collection, even collections of persons that were very well known. Fortunately there are other groups that are still about history and preservation, that do respond when contacted.

The Center for Railroad Photography & Art has an active collecting program. Warning: they are highly selective.

The Hagley Museum in Wilmington DE accepts RR collections.

RR Museum of PA also accepts collections that have a strong link to railroading and Pennsylvania. However, their site says "All offers are reviewed on a case by case basis."

Erie Lackawanna's ELRRHS reports it will receive Dave Ingles' EL slides from his widow and will scan them to the Society's website. So a specific RR's historical society may have an image or paper collection. For example:

The Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association has received the
J. David Ingles Collection, Northern Pacific Railway slides from his estate.
They are currently holding down a table in my living room, and are in the scan,
catalog, and upload to the NPRHA website queue.

I was just working on the relay race for the CRHS's portion of that collection.

I can't wait to see what's in it!

Please check your facts, sadly Carol passed away before Dave did.
