The newspiece below mentions several possible new rail trails in the northeast US. Does anyone know if any of these involve tearing out extant rail lines?

I dont. know about those mentioned in the article but up here in Maine the Old Aroostook Valley railroad track has been torn up and made into a trail as well as the Canadian Pacific Branch from Fortfairfield to Presque Isle. The latter involved quite a dispute over wether or not the ROW should revert back to the abuttors.

Why does this make me smile?

"In one town along the Farmington Canal trail, Della Penna said, residents insisted the town erect a chain link fence along the trail when it was built.

"In a couple of years, the same homeowners went back to the town and asked them to take the fence down,Â’Â’ he said. "They all wanted to use the trail.Â’Â’"

This is so reminiscent of the time I lived in Milwaukee. The light rail issue is so frustrating. The folks in the suburbs whine "We don't want THOSE PEOPLE coming into our communities and attacking our children and stealing." Meanwhile, Waukesha as a downtown is in continuous trouble with boarded up storefront. Something tells me that if they ever rebuilt the TMER&L that Waukesha would have a renaissance and it would be heavily used. But no, they don't want THOSE PEOPLE coming into there town and buying stuff at there stores.

I'll get off the soap box now.
