For those who may be interested, fully-guided tours to Bosnia to see and photograph these locomotives are offered by at least two companies:

Farrail: April 9 - 16, 2022: https://www.farrail.com/ => Upcoming Tours
Tanago: October 8 - 15, 2022: https://www.tanago.de/erlebnisreisen/de ... reisen.php

Many people who were stationed at Tuzla main during the Balkan crisis in the 90s knew that there were steam locomotives nearby.
There were stories back then about an armored train (either pre-Stalinist or from WW2) that the US Army found on a siding in the area, but I've never found documentation about that.

I was told the last use of a Kriegslok in Germany was pulling US troop trains in 1977 (low priority I guess). Unfortunately I didn't arrive until late August that year and they were done by then. There was one in the scrapyard outside of the gate at Grafenwoehr, but it had one of the peculiar tenders with steps in the tender side.

Kriegsloks in West Germany disappeared in the early 1960's. 1977 was when the last scheduled steam ended on the DB. The East Germans still had normal gauge steam until 1988.

It is quite astonishing that locomotives built to last only 5 years are now the last of its kind in regular service, albeit in Bosnia.
