I came across this article today and it looks like it may have a photo of a Russian
steam locomotive in service. Photo's not quite clear it really is steam to me but it does make me wonder. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy ... 022-03-15/

If they are running a lot of steam over there I wonder how it escaped the attention of the rail fan community for so long?

I don’t believe there is any in revenue service. My guess is the photo is from a museum or excursion operation.

Rob Dickinson’s “International Working Steam Locomotives“ is the best source of info of which I’m aware:

Anyone aware of the museum home of 3P 797-41 (ER 797-41) which was featured on a train with tanks and crews in the 2012 Russian movie "White Tiger"?

I have a cousin who had been living in Russia for the past 10-12 years, until he passed away in 2020. He would send my photos and video's of Russia's rather large state sponsored heritage steam operations, including at least 2 major steam shops that do nothing but steam work for this program. There was one location that used steam on a regular short commuter train as well. In 2019, he was trying to convince me to come over for a multi-day steam powered charter that was operated by some tour company.

Not sure where he found everything, but as a former machinist for the DRGW and long time volunteer at the CO RR Museum, he was fascinated with what was going on over there.

Roger, Thanks for the information.

The locomotive appears as 10:00 into the movie, starting the scenes where Naydenov is examining the tanks destroyed by the White Tiger.

I've been slightly fascinated with Russia for a while, as a culture so similar but yet so different to ours.

Anyways, there's a website called English Russia that I've been following the RSS feed for many years, and they often post railroad related stuff.

Here's an article about some of their heritage steam locomotives:
https://englishrussia.com/2019/04/07/st ... in-russia/

If you do a search for "locomotive" on there, it will show many more articles.

Apparently the Russian Railway Museum in Saint Petersburg has a steam restoration shop. I remember reading a good article about it, but can't seem to find it now.
