Speaking of LS&I 2-8-0's like in below's post, I read that Hocking Valley 33 is now under the ownership of the Ohio Central. Question? If the Ohio Central is closing out its steam program why are they continuing to collect more locomotives if their are no plans to restore or display them?

Two answers: first, I think OHCR's present steam suspension is tactical until the insurance situation changes, not necessarily permanant and for all time. Second, Mr. Jacobson likes steam engines: some folks collect cars; he collects steam engines. In my opinion he's been a good custodian to his collection; his engines are faring as well or better than a lot of park and museum engines I can think of.

Jerry Jacobson has had his eye on the LS&I #33 for quite some time. Yes, Jerry collects locomotives the way I collect locomotive builder's and number plates. You can never have enough of them! I would not be surprised to see the #33 shopped and put back into full operational condition. Let's hope that the insurance crisis and the general economy starts to improve so that other projects can be started.
Jerry is our modern day Nelson Blount, remember to enjoy it while we can!!!!

Why would anyone object to an interested private person providing proper care for an engine? He's maybe better than Blount, Blount didn't develop a viable freight railroad as a basis of operations-different men, different legacies.

Didn't F. Nelson Blount start the Green Mountain Railroad???? I believe it qualifies as a viable freight railroad. lol

I dont think the original question on this post shows any objection. It asks a question as to why he is collecting a large amount of engines when at the present there is no signs of returning them to operation. I was just curious if he had a master plan or something? In my opinion if I had the money to collect steamers like that I would also. Most of us probably would.

Ummm... last time I looked, Blount's Green Mountain freight operation was still going strong using the facilities he originally acquired, on the route he started with and even with some of the same men and one of the same RS-1s.

Steamtown on the other hand, moved three times (twice under Blount), has had its collection scattered, some scrapped and is now at a crossroads again.

The GMRC has been in continuous service for over 35 years... Steamtown hasn't.

Want to restate Blunt's success record?

Jeff,

The OC has been very careful to say it is suspending steam operations as they were, but not ruling out a return.

They ran steam this month, after the official "end" of operations in 2003.

Rob is correct. Ohio Central only shut down it's daily Sugar Creek tourist operation. They also cancelled several excursion scheduled for this year, but others are still a go and OC has no intention of backing out of the excursion business all together provided that affordable insurance is available. I believe that OC steam is scheduled to operate over 3 weekends in October including one excursion and 2 weekends of photo specials.

A while back, I spoke to one Ohio Central employee regarding No. 33. I was told that this locomotive with the tender booster engaged actually has more tractive effort than 4-8-4 #6325 and once restored, this locomotive can be used for long excursion trains on track not suited for the larger wheelbase of the 4-8-4. Only time will tell what happens, but when #33 was purchased, the intent was to restore it to operation and not merely "collect it."

Why has Hocking Valley Scenic's 33 been out of service? When did it last run? How did it originally come to find a home there? Can anyone post a current image of the engine at Nelsonville?
