As someone who has volunteered multiple places over the years, I don’t see why becoming a member is a necessity sometimes. I’ve moved around a bit and the places that required membership to volunteer were kind of a turn off. When I was in college and on a tight budget I couldn’t give much more than just my time. I suspect I am not alone.

Now that I have a good job and able to afford to donate to a few things and membership dues, I like to see my money go to good use. Depending on my membership level or amount I am able to donate I also would like the ability to have a say in some things. I am not saying I have to have my way… but if I’m donating some cash I would rather it go to projects I want to see done. Get what I’m saying?

Those are just my two cents. I’ve been in the shoes of a young college lad who lived off top ramen and max and cheese. But I still wanted to donate my time. Maybe at the time I wasn’t a “high profile” volunteer. But I could still hold a paint brush at that time.

Now that I have some skill base when it comes to diesel locomotives, I like to give places a “test run” before I decide whether or not I want to help out. Sometimes the headache is not worth it. Another reason why I would like to be able to volunteer without being a member. Shortly after if I believe it is worth my time I will pony up the cash, and probably donate more than your typical member.

Then again you guys will probably shit on my methods and call me a Rimmasch, so I don’t even know why I bother posting. Maybe i think my opinion here helps. Will see.

I have volunteered at one railroad that doesn't require and one that does require a membership. The one that required a membership would wave your renewal fee if you had volunteered at least 140 hours the previous year. Also, they did a background check on members every year. That got started when we hosted DOWT.

I am in the Dakotas. Ohio is a decent distance. But a state I have not been spent much time in. Maybe that can change some day. Always looking for new experiences!
