We have a possible buyer for our locomotive, SJ 1307, in the USA. Can anyone advise us on shipping methods from Denmark?

I haven't done anything like this for 30 years, so this might be bad advice: If possible, put her in a container. Then anybody can handle the engine, truck, ship, or rail. If she won't fit, go with a roll on roll off platform. For moving by truck, try for a winch truck with a lowboy and a loading ramp. Again, BEST OF LUCK.

If Roll-On Roll-Off is where this heads, should it come to the US, it'll be a matter of knowing where to send it. I know Seaview Transportation's operation in Quonset Point sees RoRo ships, bringing in VWs in from Europe. They've got rail access, but outbound clearances might be an issue if it's put on a flatcar. Their outside access is the Northeast Corridor so the overhead wire will be a problem there... I only think of them where I've seen the operation (granted it's been a few years). But the owner there might also have some ideas on what other ports might be able to handle it. I have a feeling that 2-6-4 might be too big for the largest containers.

I understand Wasatch has experience in shipping locomotives and boilers internationally, just call them before September.

A tourist line just north of Ottawa (Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield-Railway) imported a steam locomotive from Sweden back around 1990. How did they ship it across the Atlantic?

We shipped a PCC streetcar from The Hague using a MAFI ro/ro platform. The car sat on what looks like a large dolly and was towed and lifted with ease.

"Roll-on/Roll-off." Routinely used for international auto/truck shipping. Also John Deere tractors/combines, etc.

Baltimore's Dundalk and Seagirt Terminals have extensive experience in this--they were the port of entry for the Siemens ICE and ASEA X2000 locos and trainsets headed to Amtrak for testing before the Acelas were ordered. But on the other hand, just about any terminal where you can find 10,000 cars parked outside at some point also qualifies. (These lots, of course, lead to conspiracy theories with photos of these lots about how "the manufacturers are holding tens of thousands of new cars off the market to keep prices sky-high!" and the like.............)

A container can be handled easiest by the most people, so you can get them to compete pricewise. It might even be worth the trouble of taking the engine apart if she won't fit. I'd crunch those numbers.

Forget containers and flat racks. Standard and high cube international containers are 20’ or 40’ long and limited to about 58,000 lbs (26,500 kg). You need to chase down the guys that handle oversized and overweight loads. That’s special handling all around - loading and shipping. It’s highly unlikely to go on a container ship. They like those standard, stackable boxes. Hoowee, that ain’t gonna be cheap.
