 Post subject: Old in-service photos?
PostPosted: Mon Oct 20, 2003 11:13 pm

Very impressive job. Has anyone ever seen in-service photos of the 89 in Canada? I've seen photos of some of the others, but don't recall seeing the 89.

Jeff: yes, that's the CNR whistle that arrived with 89.

Ted: yes, that train looked "right." Several people commented on the wooden boxcars.

Josh, Les: 90 would be a bit more complicated project because the smokebox has been shortened. Kelly Anderson did offer to run up a quote (gee, thanks, Kelly ;-).

475 got magnetic "N&W" lettering on the tender once, but we would be looking at a new headlight bracket and headlight in addition to lettering changes.

The "undecorated" hopper is ex-PRR. If I understood him correctly, SRC obtained it from the Railroad Museum of PA, and Linn had hoped to have it painted before the trip. Maybe next time.

Kevin - never been responsible for returning a 4-8-4 to service, at least yet. What ya got in mind? :)

Bob: Strasburg (or perhaps Dave Hoffman, an SRC employee and CNR fan) had one photo of 89 in July of 1955, lugging a different tender.

Mike Eagleson provided photos of 89 in the Montreal dead line in 1962, after being bought by Blount but before being moved to Vermont.

Victor Hand mentioned that he has photos of 89 in service on the "Trenton Branch" (due north of Rochester, running from Trenton to Picton, ON) from family visits to the area, but I haven't seen them.

One last view, with Kelly Anderson visible in the cab . . .

I will have too agree with all that was said Strasburg did a great job on the old girl,,,As for the pic's you would think you were in Canada..

I have only one commet to make about the tender,I do not think that she has a different tender,,,when she arrived at the old Steamtown in North Walpole,N.H. in 1961 she had coal extentions on the tender,,,When Nelson Blount was putting her back in service for the Green Mountain railroad,,he removed the coal extentions,,those of you who have the book Green Mountain Railroad by R.W.Nimke it does show a picture of her at North Walpole,N.H. on page 36,,thank you.....

Sort of, Pat.

The in-service photo shows a very different (much smaller) tender. Some time between July 1955 (when that photo was taken) and June 1962 (when Mike Eagleson shot 89 in Montreal), 89 got a different tender, the one you refer to.

That tender may be the one now behind 89 - or it's possible that the tenders behind 89 and 96 were swapped while at Steamtown.

In any event, the point is somewhat moot, as the tank body is completely new - based on the old tank, but 10" taller all round.

There were so many variations on CNR small power tenders - troll through the Denver Public Library's online collection of CNR photos by Otto Perry to see - that "there is a prototype for evertyhing." While 89 is certainly not "exactly like" she appeared in the 1950s, with only a couple of added details (the distinctive whistle shroud and a tender railing, mainly) she would look right at home in a CNR shed.

Post subject: A Canadian Pacific Railway Return?
PostPosted: Tue Oct 21, 2003 12:12 pm

John,

Congratulations on an outstanding event, and thank you ever so much for posting all those photos for those of us who weren't able to be there in person.

Now for those of us whose preference in Canadian railways runs towards the beaver instead of the maple leaf, Strasburg owns a certain ex-CPR 4-6-0. If they would only rebuild her with a conventional firebox rather than a Belpaire firebox, we could have a Canadian Pacific event at Strasburg.

Linn, are you reading this? I heartily applaud your company's backdating 89 and 475 for us railway history purists. 972 properly restored could be a fitting recreation of the "World's Gratest Travel System."

Thank you Linn, for all you and your parents have done over the years to keep steam railroading alive for the generations to come.

The left side turned out fine - but the weather turned cloudy around mid-day, when we turned no. 89 to face west again, so I only printed one of those for Linn (a meet with no. 90), and didn't scan it.

I think maybe when we have a complete change at city council AND a change at the municipal works (who are responsible for maintenance) then we might see some change. Previously the engine was looked after on a work program from the local reformatory, and they kept the engine well painted and maintained, but since that facility closed, nobody has looked at the engine since. It is only a matter of time before the asbestos starts falling out in chunks..then we might see action.

Sorry I'm logging on late. Clarifications are in the roster below:

The wooden flat is Ma & PA 122, formerly a Phila & Reading boxcar that burned; a long story ...

> Two-bay hopper (parent road unknown

New York Central, original number unknown.

> Two-bay ballast hopper (Ma & Pa 302?)

194796 PRR Class H21G. It is the last in its class and was the icebreaker at Gallitzin Tunnel.

> Wooden flat car (parent road unknown)

SRC 120. Ex-Pennsylvania Railroad class GRA 100,000 pound capacity composite wooden gondola No. 335287.

> 713 (or 733) Ma and Pa wooden boxcar
> PRR 96451 XL class wooden boxcar

Whoops! My error. SRC 120 wasn't in the consist. the other flat was SRC 04, a boom car formerly used with SRC No. 03 (steam crane). Was PRR class FM idler and truck car, ex-PRR No. 491240.

My records show that the Dundas rail photo service out of Dundas, ON offered five shots of CN 89 all taken in 1953. Might they still be available?
I saw your reference to a 1955 photo of 89: Do you mean the shot on the Wiarton turntable, 7-12-55?
