Not being a rivet counter myself, but occasionally finding myself in need of minutia, can anybody tell me if there are any dimensional differences between the short high hoods of EMD GP7/9 and SD7/9?

Would recommend editing the title of your post to include “EMD GP7/9 - SD 7/9 information?” to make it more likely to be noticed by someone with this area of insight.

Having driven zillions of GP7s, GP9s, SD7s, and SD9s, I'd say the dimensions in question are the same... BUT, I don't have dimensioned drawings of these locomotive classes. There could be minute variations in size, and I'd never know the difference.

I would suggest you get scale drawings of each and compare them.

Are you considering transplanting a SD short hood onto a GP, or vice-versa?

If anyone on the board here as either of these models, a quick set of measurements would be helpful.

You might consider taking the applicable short hood GP and SD parts list and related drawings from EMD Parts Catalog 90 or the locomotive specification book to a photocopy place and having the scales matched up to allow a comparison.

The GP7 came out more than 2 years before the SD7 and on units that originally had steam generators the GP and SD hood door arrangements are not the same.
