Had not seen this mentioned here, looks like it is well along already https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews ... nk-engine/ Nice looking engine. https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotive ... -numbered/

There was another project to build an L1 2-6-4 tank engine in the UK 11 years ago but I don't know how it developed: viewtopic.php?t=32837

I don't believe the L1 got past the "ask questions" stage. That said, I remember rumors attributed to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust having tossed around a V3 2-6-2 build, but if memory serves that was before the public announcement to do a V4.

So other than "Tornado," how many of these new steam projects were completed as working locomotives in the UK? I know there were several such groups in the UK once Tornado's team proved it could be done.

There was a website listed in the 11 y.o. post that was meant to document new build steam in the UK, what it is now may say a lot: http://newbuildsteam.com/

I'm not sure many have been finished yet... But there's a number nearly there. Patriot, Beachy Head, a GWR County and Grange. There's others in various earlier stages... I'm betting we see Beachy Head out first. It's in final fitting out prior to testing.

The G5 groups website is this one.....
https://www.g5locomotiveltd.co.uk/

In the smaller loco category, you've also got an F5 as well......
https://www.holdenf5.co.uk/news/

Some of the plans for "New Build" locomotives have vanished without trace whilst others are still underway with varying rates of progress. Covid obviously delayed a lot of work on a number of them, plus others have got caught up in preservation "Politics" and other problems, so how many of them will actually get completed is another matter....

The G5 project is far along, the boiler is complete, as is the frame, (crank) axles (which apparently were a challenge), and wheels, it looks like the major remaining components are parts of the running gear: https://www.g5locomotiveltd.co.uk/page/ ... -progress/

Interesting that they finished the boiler first, in the USA the standard practice is to wait until the end to install tubes.

In Britain, "time tickin' in my head" is a lyric from a Joe Jackson song, not cognizance of a mandatory expensive reinspection...

Now my understanding of their inspection requirements might be off, but doesn't the timer for service time start once the inspector signs off as good for service?
