Twenty years ago we got some bids on rewiring the RS3m, in the range of around $60,000. One contract shop wanted us to ship it to them so they could work on it when they had the time and needed some fill in work. An individual said he would do it, if we bought the wire. I was told it had 7 miles of wire in it.

Seems improbable they would or even could premake a harness without knowing the precise distance for each and every wire. Great for efficient manufacture but impossible for a one off. Surely this is done by pulling a few at time point to point. That’s not to suggest creating a rat’s nest; they can be routed neatly, with identifying labels, and bundled. I’m sure it’s a huge project. There is no denying that. That may be occupying the bulk of the time on IRM’s very similar FA project also involving an Alco prime mover and GE electricals leading to 4 traction motors.

Not criticizing in the least. Just wondering what still needs to be done and if it’s more than wiring.

At the factory the wiring was laid out on a pin board that approximated a harness. On a built up unit it's basically pulling wire based on the schematic and more importantly the "wire running list".

Here are before and after pics of a disaster of an SW1200 that we took on some time ago. The pink Exane was the previous owners attempt to keep it running. From experience the scrap neoprene insulated low voltage wire from an SW1500 will fill up three 55 gallon drums.

If you're contemplating a rewire use Exane and high quality connections. A good wire label maker is a must.

Yikes. I can appreciate what a mess that was to redo. Wow.

When WSOR moved the guts of the E9AM to the E9B I presume the twin electrical cabinets were moved intact but I don’t know if it was possible to move any harnesses. I would presume Doyle moved his donor’s cabinet intact as well. But dissimilar units make moving any harnesses even less likely.

IRM is most likely creating their cabinet from scratch. All of these projects required an impressive amount of work for which we fans are appreciative. A living, breathing twin-engine E9B is just one result so far.

Actually, you’d be surprised at what’s already done above deck. BTW, by strange coincidence, that looks like Rock white paint.

What was left in the electrical cabinet of the L&N FA when they started, had it been gutted?

Is there a good source for updates on its progress east? Love to see it but sounds like it’s being routed via KC.

https://www.facebook.com/gvtrailco Photo posted 7 hours ago, the routing is along the Columbia river and presumably through Montana:

I was at the Portland engine house on Friday and the volunteers said the PA1 had left early on Thrusday.

Wow, look how small the 190 looks between the engines and that boxcar.

How many loads were behind the PA as pictured.

Thyis reminds me, uncomfortably, of the two MP54s that were pulled apart when someone coupled them between the power and a 125-odd-car train.

Locomotives dead-in-tow in a train are supposed to be right behind the power, at least it was on CSX, so it's where I would expect to see it.

https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=70 ... 0334447840 "UPDATE: scheduled to leave Pasco this afternoon [difficult to say when "this afternoon" means because it was updated at 8:00PM last night so I think it meant yesterday 4/25] putting it passing by Spokane around 930-1030 tonight if departure keeps.

NKP DL190 to depart Pasco,WA later tonight and should be passing by Spokane in the early morning, also passing Hauyard,ID and Sandpoint,ID and continuing its quest east.

This update is for informational purposes only. Please refrain from entering railroad property during this historic journey. Safety first!"

In the comments someone asked if it would be going through Nebraska and GVT responded: "Currently yes, Alliance, Ravenna. Subject to change but approx ETA would be Friday night/ Saturday morning. Very tentative."

Anybody have any idea of possible routing through Ohio? I'm guessing it has to come this way.
