I did not notice that this information about Sierra #34 has been posted to this thread. Press Release from CSRM Foundation:

Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 16, 2022) – Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation have acquired historic Sierra Railway Steam Locomotive No. 34 through a generous donation by railroad enthusiasts Chris Baldo and Marion Hatch. The California State Railroad Museum Foundation and California State Parks will hold a donation ceremony the morning of Saturday, April 2, beginning at 10 a.m. at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. Coinciding with the opening day of weekend excursion train rides at Railtown 1897, the special ceremony is open to the public to attend (Park admission is $5 per person).

Built in 1925 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Sierra Railroad, the 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive is the only surviving Sierra locomotive to have never been in service on another railroad. The 87-ton locomotive starred in "Bound for Glory" (as Santa Fe 1496) in 1976 and last operated in 1980. For the last 40+ years, it has been out of service and housed in the Roundhouse at Railtown 1897 in Jamestown.

Extensive restoration efforts are needed before No. 34 can return to service alongside the famous Sierra No. 3® “Movie Star Locomotive” and the powerful Sierra No. 28 that both pull weekend excursion trains on the Sierra Railway.

“We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Baldo and Mr. Hatch in helping the Foundation acquire this locomotive,” said Tim Schroepfer, President & CEO of the California State Railroad Museum Foundation. “The Foundation is thrilled that this historic locomotive will be preserved at Railtown 1897 in perpetuity, and we look forward to the day it will once again run on this historic railroad for the enjoyment of families and rail enthusiasts for generations to come.”

GN 1246 looks to be on the move east, there’s a Vanderbuilt tender with GN logos on a truck in Elko, NV, this morning, which would also explain the trucks I saw sometime late last week.

Here is a question about the Southern Pacific wrecker. The published list shows it as SP #7180, Bucyrus C/N 4535. This is what I have for that crane :
4535 07-19-26 160t SW
Southern Pacific RR #687(3rd)>694(2nd)>7014(1st)
(10-29-32) >7021(2nd) 1945
Wrecked near Ravenna Siding (MP 52.4) 07-12-66
Scrapped

This is what I have for SP #7180:
Industrial Works #2249 120t W 07-10
Southern Pacific #611>721(1st)>7010(2nd)>7100>7180

Which is it?

CSRM's claim in its press release stating that Sierra No. 34 “is the only surviving Sierra locomotive to have never been in service on another railroad” appears to be factually incorrect, on several counts. In the first place, No. 34 has been in service on the Sierra Railway, the Sierra Railroad, and the Hetch Hetchy Railroad. Of course, some might consider this service as being on the same road, since the Hetch Hetchy was operated by the Sierra at one point. But even with that consideration, No. 28 was never in service on a railroad other than the Sierra (and as far I know was never in service on the Hetch Hetchy), was it?

And what about No. 18? It was sold and moved from Jamestown, but was it ever in service on another railroad?

It is good to know that No. 34 will be staying put. Hopefully she will be joined one day by Nos. 18 and 36.

Any additional info on this Great Northern 2-8-0?

According to this railfan.com article below, 1246’s tender (and just the tender) is at Heber City.

Also, according to this article it says that Sierra #18, Long Bell Lumber #4, and Charles McCormick Lumber #100 have also been sold. It’s already been disclosed that #100 is going to the V&T. Did both #4 and #18 head to california?

https://railfan.com/shay-locomotive-fin ... st-scenic/

This then leaves Sierra #36, McBryde Sugar #4 (30 inch gauge) OP&E #1, Glen Alden Corp #25 (3 ft gauge) and the tenderless GN #1246 as the last locomotives that have either yet to be sold or publicly broadcasted as sold.

I wonder why they would separate #1246 from her tender. One would think that it would make #1246 more difficult to sell.

Oh, I know, the Age of Steam Roundhouse is buying #1246 to rebuild her into one of those hideous homemade saddle tank shop switchers that some railroads were famous for!

And doesn't Heber Valley already have one tender without an engine? They bought the tender off that SP/T&NO 2-10-2 to cannibalize for the oil conversion on UP #618 as I recall.

No idea about the situation regarding its tender, but the 2-8-0 will be moving back to WA.

Somewhat buried in the announcement is the news that NWRM traded the former Union Pacific/Edward Hines Lumber 2-8-0 #529 to Oregon Coast for the 1246.

I wonder if anyone associated with the distribution of Kepner's collection could share with the group as to the final destinations of the engines that have left, as well as what equipment still remains to be purchased.

Thanks!

Kelly-my guess is that the best person for this information might be Martin Hansen, attorney, who posts as 'LoggerHogger' on trainorders.com. I believe he was instrumental in the legalities etc of the disposition. I do not know if he frequents this forum or not.
