NP717 and Burlington Silver Crest are finally home at GSRM!!!!
It was said it would never happen, the locomotive and coach would never leave their storage track in Montgomery, MN, but thanks to the epic efforts of the crew at Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul, the impossible DID happen.
GSRM volunteers also put in a great deal of site prep work at the museum and at Montgomery to prepare for the move.
We also want to thank Josh Klehr of J A Klehr Services from Montgomery for all his assistance prepping for the move.
This move has been two years in the making and GSRM owes a big THANK YOU!!!! to the crew at Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul and to Josh Klehr, without their efforts, this move would have never happened.
After two days work by Mike and his crew from Vic’s Crane over Monday and Tuesday, NP717 and Burlington Silver Crest were finally on GSRM rails for the first time.
Sadly, both have been heavily vandalized over the years while stored off site in Montgomery. Air brake piping and valves have been stolen from both. All window glass has been broken. Copper wire has been stolen from both, including cutting nearly all the traction motor cables from NP717.
A fire was started inside Silver Crest. Unfortunately the fire department did more damage than the fire. The only fire damage was smoke soot on the walls and some burned debris left behind from other vandals, but the fire department cut an access hole in the side of the car which will present a challenge to repair. Ironically, there was no need to cut the hole as a mere three feet above was the broken open window the arsonists used to throw a lighted accelerant inside.
For now, as time and funds allow, both will be cosmetically restored. Future restoration to operation depends on available funding. It will cost $40-50,000 alone to repair the traction motors on the locomotive.
We’re just ecstatic both are safely home now and we can better care for them.

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 4713 "Silver Forest", which this thread was started about, will be moved to GSRM next year.
