Ex-Bangor & Aroostook F3s parked at Jim Thorpe, Pa., looking a little faded in their replicated Jersey Central paint, probably like they would have on the real CNJ.

Now you know why the CNJ went to the Deep Sea Green with yellow stripes (toothpaste) scheme!
Actual CNJ units looked quite a bit worse with paint worn off after a relatively brief time

I just took a picture of these F3s at Jim Thorpe on 10/18/2003, when I rode the R&N excursion up there from Port Clinton.

The F3s looked pretty nice and the single tone honker horns on them are neat sounding. There was also a surly engineer running the train. He got out and was cursing up a storm, complaining about there being too many passengers and they were taking too long.

I had to cut off the bottom of the picture to remove the heads/arms/camera of the railfans in front of me. I lucked out with this shot, since I was just blindly holding my digital camera over my head. :-)

Boy does that remind me of my childhood contact with the CNJ! In 5th grade we had to write letters to 3 companies asking for information about what they do. The Santa Fe send lots of great publicity photos, a system map, and info on how Barstow yard worked. The Erie Lackawanna sent a system map, a coloring book and timetables. The CNJ sent a poorly mimeographed letter warning of the criminal penalties for tresspassing! Your engineer was truely authentic!

We (the ARHS) just finished some hole patching and repainting work in Sept. If you consider that the 56 was painted in 1989 and the 57 in 1993, the paint is holding up fairly well for outside storage. Of course, the side facing the station is the sunny side, and does take more of a beating. It'd be nice if someone trimmed the brush back along the line, from the looks of scratch marks............

We did some buffing on the nose of 57 to see if we could bring back a little of the shine, and maybe match the shine of the new paint a little closer, We did have some success, and I think more cosmetic work will be done in the spring of next year. Once you repaint one area, the surrounding areas look that much worse. If we're not careful, we may wind up repainting both locomotives...... :-)

I remember that it was hard to get a really smooth finish on the nose of 57, although we worked diligently to smooth it out the best we could. Ah, the wonders of bondo. This, of course, affects how the paint job looks and how much of a shine you can get back.

57 may have some side panels replaced next year, but we'll have to see how that fits into our other maintenance projects on these units.

Ahh, its always something.......
