From what I understand clean up happened Saturday into late evening (around 11) and resumed the next morning with things back on the track by noon. As far as track repair goes I don't know.

Ya know, there's nothing worse than going on the ground, with a train load of passengers. Been there, done that. A few years ago, when the railroad i work for was running excursions, we had just started out from our boarding area with about 200people on board, and one of our units, an ALCO C-425 went on the ground on a curve. Our trailing unit on the other end was able to pull the train clear of the crossing, and get the passengers off....I was one of 2 people that did most of the rerailing (I was even dressed in my conductors uniform while doing this) and managed to get the lead axle of each truck back on the track in about 2 hrs....The boss wanted to load the train up again, and go, but i argued and said that we should at least try to put the unit around first. Good move, it dropped again, we rerailed it, and the trips were cancelled for the rest of that day and sunday morning, until the track was repaired....

Well the rail flipped over. Sounds like about the same thing that happened to 1522 some years back just after the "1st" restoration. Lucky in this case that the engine made it over first. Could this have been "caused" by the the driving wheels of the engine (much larger wheels than a diesel rolling over in sequence with the locos rather heavy weight) crossing a weakened section of rail on a curve where most of the engine weight/force was exerted on the outer (in this case right) rail?

In the grand scheme of things - this was a minor event and thankfully there were no injuries. Between the D-L and the NPS, everyone worked together to ensure that nothing worse could have happened post-incident.

Well this isn't the first time the 2317 has derailed while it was in service on steamtown. I remember from one of the shop tours that during one of the polar express runs that the lead trucks somehow jumped the rails over a gravel crossing (if i remember right)

2317 itself was not derailed, just the tender and subsequent coaches.

Of interest......

Apparently 2317 kept derailing her front truck. It was found that at some point she was equippped with a truck from a CPR hudson, which was not designed for a pacific and therefore was subject to problems. This was fixed and the problem has ceased.

I have never heard a guess when 2317 was equipped with a hudson truck, either during or after her CPR days.
