The "Other" CN 2-6-0 *PIC*

Hello All

It appears I chose a good weekend to get out of Scranton. On the day of the Steamtown incident I visited a few friends down at the Middletown and Hummelstown RR and got some fantastic pictures of their ex CN 2-6-0 #91. A great little railroad with some fantastic, friendly employees. Below is a picture of 91 crossing the Swatara Creek on 10/25/2003.

Had a few questions on these engines. I noticed that Strasburg's 89 has draft vents in the side of the firebox where as the 91 does not. Was this a Strasburg modification? A Steamtown modification? I've also noticed that the air reservoir on the 92 at the W&W and the 96 at Ohio Central is located farther back and partially under the cab. Were all the CN 2-6-0's built in the same configuration and then changed by the CN? Or did the modifications come in tourist service?

Just some random questions for the aficionados/operators of these neat little machines.

These really are neat locomotives; too bad more are not running around (or even in parks/museums).

Here is a picture of one at Morrisburg, Ontario.

I'd expect that Strasburg made the firebox mods...

I think the problem is that Geocities won't let you link directly to an image that's being hosted on one of their free accounts, probably because they can't put a pop-up ad in an image file.

You could try putting the image into an HTML page and giving us the link to that page instead.

Thanks for the photo. She doesn't show much smoke in this bridge photo. Did she have a short train?

Actually she runs with a pretty clean stack the times I've seen her, the mark of a seasoned crew. They're heading upgrade at this point so I'm sure they're getting pretty good combustion.

She was hauling 3 DL&W MU cars that time, but I know they've run 4 at times as well.

Could be data transfer limits (per 24 hr period) as well on the free accounts.

#81 was still on display in Palmerston, Ont when I was there in Feb 1987. I just re-edited my "Snow Plow with CN F7's" and put a graphic for the loco as we see it from inside the winged snow plow. Ironic I was working on that the week of the 89 trip at Strasburg, eh!!!!

I'm not positive, but I believe this picture was taken in Brandford, Ontario where #96 was stored on an industrial siding for a few years. It is currently in storage at the Ohio Central.

Didn't look near that good in 1987. No number boards or paint trim back then. Unfortunately there is no more CN or any rails in Palmerston today.

The M&H engine in Dave's picture also appears to have a bit of red running gear. What gives?

Interesting point,

While the red on the running gear on the park engine above doesn't seem right, I've seen other CN locomotives with red on the running gear just like the red trimmed main rod on the 91 on the M&H. If I recall correctly, Strasburg's 31 had a red trimmed main rod at one time.
