What were the correct interior paint colors for the troop sleepers?

Behind the layers of white paint on our car we are finding a brown.

We found a light brown at the bottom of the layers too. The Pullman Library should be able to tell you for sure.

Based on the list of files the good folks at the Pullman Library sent me they do not have a bill of materials list for lot 6704 cars, the first group.

So how are or have the other groups been determining the correct paint and other restoration items for the first group of cars?

The Library of Congress may have a copy of this. I don't know if it covers interior colors of your car.

Some of the TMs I have seen are essentially copies of the appropriate section of the AAR Manual of Standard and Recommended Practice.

Thanks. I bought several of their files on these cars. They have nothing along the lines of a bill of materials though.

Following up in case someone else searches for this info.

The good folks at Pullman Library were able to provide a bill of materials for the cars.

The list shows PPG codes 52847 and 52848 for plywood paint. From what I have been able to find those come back as a mint wintergreen and a gray.

The list shows a 52845 light ivory for primer. That looks to be the color I see in interior photos all over the web.

CB&Q passenger train/equipment historian, J. W. Schultz's, latest masterpiece is on the CB&Q WWII troop kitchen cars (300 of 'em) that the "Q" modified after the war for service as mail and express cars at their Havelock, NE, car shop.

His narrative refers to the interior being painted "beige".

His work in the latest BRHS "Burlington Bulletin" No. 71 covers not only the Burlington's "jeeps" but also summarizes other carriers, large and small, that picked up surplus troop sleepers and kitchen cars to be repurposed predominately as head end cars but not all were used in that service.

I wonder if that is the repurpose color.

No, original. Schultz's direct quote concerning the newly constructed cars is: "Car interiors were painted a light beige."

A quote referring to a photo depicted the cars as-rebuilt at Havelock interior colors is: It appears the car's original light beige interior color was retained."

Hmm. Our car has light green behind the beige.

Bill - curious question: have you seen any samples of those PPG colors? I’m curious if the light green is similar to the run of the mill government “institutional green”. Might be able to find that in the Fed Specs. Since these are interior colors, a PPG dealer should be able to mix samples for you. They may have to consult the lab in Pittsburgh to get the formula close but it might be worth the effort. A actual sample is always best to have for matching. If you need to go to the lab direct, I may be able to help.

The paint that’s on there now is likely an oil base. You’ll have to seal it before you put anything other than oil over top so the new paint stays stuck on.
