Hello,
I have a builders photo of a Baldwin TWO foot gauge locomotive, built in 1897.
its a very small loco, and I have no size data for it at all..
(im thinking about building a model of it..)

So im wondering if there was a standard size builders plate at that time?
would the same size plate been applied to EVERY locomotive regardless of its size?
if so, anyone know the diameter of a Baldwin plate in 1897?

Scot, the standard size plate of that period was the 12" diameter - Baldwin-Burnham Williams & Company plate. That size plate would be used most often. However, I have a 10" plate of the same style from 1907 that was on the WW&F #7. Baldwin also used an 8" diameter plate on some of its mine locomotives as I have one from 1901. I also have a 7-1/2" diameter plate from 1893 from a Plymouth Cordage locomotive. The standard 9-1/4" round plate did not come into general use until 1912. Hope that sheds a little light on Baldwin plates of that time period.

If anyone is interested, the Boothbay Railway Museum just put a reproduction 9" Baldwin builders plate on e-bay of 1923. A replica from a 2-foot gauge engine.
