Was the last W.M. steam engine in service the #830, class H-9 ? (not including Shay 6)

W.M. Pacific 204(?) survived at least into the 1960's. When and where did she meet her demise?

Does anyone have accurate measurements for W.M. cab and tender numbers and lettering ? Stensils and/or diagrams ?

Inquiring minds need to know.

I think #204 is the one that was rigged up to thaw coal. It had an electric blower mounted in front of the boiler and steam piping attached to the dome. It is sad that this locomotive was not saved. I have a book somewhere with a photo of it and it definately lasted into the 1960's. I will have to find the photo.

There is a photo in the recent Morning Sun book,
Trackside with George Leilich (?spelling?).

The last Western Maryland Railway steamer in active service was 2-8-0 #830. Her last day of operational usage was July 20, 1954.

Two steam locomtoives were preserved by the WM RY, being:

#202 - 4-6-2 type, placed on display in public park in Hagerstown, Maryland.

#6 - Shay (geared) type, placed originally in the B & O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. It was later removed for its usage at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in West Virginia. This Shay was retired by the WM Ry in 1953, following a period of storage, after the Maryland coal branch it had operated upon no longer had traffic. Its last coal train service operation was in 1950, but it did operate by its own power in 1953 between Hagerstown and Baltimore enroute to the B & O Museum.

Both of these Western Maryland Railway steam locomotives still exist.

The 830 was the last WM steam in service by about two months. All others are listed as out of service no later than May of 1954.

The 204 lasted in thaw service until 1961 or possibly 62 as I recall. The 205, a coal burner while in train service but converted to oil for thaw service, was also used until about 1956 or 57. Both were scrapped but I do not know if it was done on site or by one of the locomotive scrappers.

I suggest you contact the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society in Union Bridge, MD for the letter sizes on WM steam. There is also a WM Yahoo group which may be able to provide you with the information. Contact me off link if you need more information.
