However, I believe the "cats wiskers" lettering scheme shown in the picture of 4800 was Loewy's idea. Loewy was a fascinating man. I don't think he invented anything, but his look is found everywhere.

Loewy's streamling of the carbody largly amounted to a bit more rounding of the existing curves and doors. Also note that the GG1 prototype started out as 4899 and the R1 was 4800. They later switched numbers shortly before the Loewy scheme when on, then as the GG1 went into production units over 100, the R1 was kicked up to a higher number. The differences in the fine details of the 4800 and other GG1s show the influence of Loewy. Attached is a rendition of the original GG1 paint scheme as applied before Loewy.

Thanks for moving the report I heard from the rumor stage to a more solid story!

The RR Museum of PA is a good organization, of which i am a member. I tended to doubt such a story but then this is the place to sort out stories.

I believe the objective in the P5a was to create a streamlined steeplecab, taking the L5 1-B-B-1 carbody layout, placing a pantograph on each hood, and then slanting, filling and rounding the vertical surface transitions.
The GG1, R1 and DD2 carbodies were natural extensions of the P5a carbody design.
