Midwest Railway Preservation Society is proud to announce a matching fund campaign for the restoration of Grand Trunk Western 4070. Your donations will be matched 7 times so no contribution is too small! A ten dollar gift will become $80 when the other 7 donors match your gift! The seven donors will contribute up to $1000.00 each in matching money. The first project is welding the main frame of 4070 and that will happen soon if we raise this money. The engine is in the roundhouse and located on our working drop pit. We are going to remove the pony truck so that access to the frame can be gained. Lincoln Electric (headquartered in Cleveland) has donated the welding rod and they will supervise the project. You can contribute on-line with the link or mail a contribution to

MRPS has received more than the $1000.00 which was the amount needed for the 7:1 matching! This means the we have at least $8000.00 for the 4070 frame welding project. Our Thanks to all of the donors! Our next step is to remove some metal samples from the frame and the existing broken weld and send them on to Lincoln Electric for metalurgical analysis. When we receive those results we plan to start the repair.

Our next major project for the 4070 restoration is to replace the smoke box. We have located two sources that can roll the heavy mrtal which is used in the smoke box. We are organizing a matching fund for that project.
