The unit, an Alco S2, was last used at a grain elevator in Indiana, was rescued and brought back by a different group several years ago, and has been undergoing a slow restoration. It was the unit used to scrap the Lehigh & New England RR across New Jersey after the entire line was abandoned in the early sixties.

The article says it is the last L&NE "intact locomotive", I wonder if that means that a semi-intact unit exists somewhere else.

There was a small group (two brothers and a friend) who put up their own funds to save this engine, and deserve as much credit as anybody else[/i]

Well, it's the only surviving intact diesel locomotive. There's also 0-6-0 #207 out to Illinois Railway Museum.

I confess I'm sad about the L&NE, but it should be remembered that this was an operation nut subject to the Hepburn Act, operated nearly entirely under a coal company, and the decision was made in the early Sixties to shut down the operation cleanly, with falling demand for anthracite, rather than drag things out. Some of the trackage was transferred to CNJ operation -- by the time I was old enough to see trains on the section in New Jersey, it was being operated with blue RS units.

Sounds like NS has a new favorite #611.
