A friend of mine whoworks for the San Francisco Muni has reported that the MUNI has purchased 15 of the PCCs that used to run on the Newark Subway.

The cars will be used on the F Line and i predict that they will replace the Melan streetcars that are not very popular with either the riders or the operating crews.

Seen this announcement anywhere else?

This agreement was announced a couple of weeks ago in a couple of online forums. Muni will be purchasing 15 cars (including car #14, already in San Francisco) for $25,000 each. Initially they will be minimally rehabbed to bring them up to Muni operating standards, and will later be put through a major overhaul. I haven't heard any plans for them to replace the Milan cars; F-Market line service is at such minimal levels that the new cars will probably be used simply to bolster the existing fleet and later to establish service on the E line.

Just curious - why are the Milan cars not very popular? And is the F line service at a "minimal level" due to a lack of enough cars to make it more than that?

The Milan cars are not popular because they are very noisy compared to the PCCs.

You can really see the improved design elements that went into a PCC.

Also the Milans cars have seats which are varnished wood; nice to look at but hard to sit on.

I understand that it is both shortage of cars and operators that have made for the reduced level of service on the F Line. Although, I often see three cars at the north end of the line at Jones Stree.

The E Line by the way is a north/south portion of the Embarcadero that will go south past where the Pac Bell Ball Park stands. Currently to get there you have to change from a PCC to an LRV at Embarcadero Station.

Hope that helps.

Probably a lot of gear and motor noise ... wood creaking ... lots of clanging and banging ... absolutely toonerville at its finest !!!!!
