There is an active effort to revive milk-by-rail service from central New York State to New York City. The plan, as laid out in the article, is pretty much the way it was done 100 years ago!

I love stories like this, as they remind us that the industrial history that we study is often valuable in the modern day.

It is also why I remain ardently in favor of rail banking all exisiting rail lines in the US and Canada, and never abandoning the infrastructure for a trail (the loons in Bennington, VT are at it again trying to rip up a VRS line).

You never know what the future will hold.

Did you ever think you'd hear about a milk train coming back?

The part of our efforts that preserve infrastructure are both noble and worthy. Today's "old way" is tomorrow's "new thing."

There is no link shown-so perhaps my comments are ill-informed but nonetheless, I ask the question:

What good are milk trains if the dairys that they served are gone ?

I can't imagine that there is one dairy left in the five boroughs of NYC. Seems to me that the last example in Manhattan became the broadcast studios of CBS-TV (on West 57th St) many years ago. Sealtest had a big plant in Queens near the LIRR-also closed.

If this is the story about the collapsible milk containers or something along those lines I have never heard anything since.

Milk by Rail Story

I still don't understand what they would ship back. NYSW is moving a lot of trash now but in former woodchip hoppers like many other railroads.

Seems to me havind dedicated cars, while shipping back empty, would be more cost effective then shipping via road.

I'd love to see some data from this study.
