Tender as a Town Watertank

I recently was told of a town in MT, Ingomar, that has an old tender in use as their town watertank. First I've ever heard of this application for old tenders. Was this a common practice? Do any others still remain in service? Anyone know the history of the one in Ingomar?

"Twenty three miles west of Vananda is the town of Ingomar, MP1203.9. The Milwaukee Road depot is still standing here and across the road is the tender from an S-3 steam engine. It looks very out of place with no engine or tracks to roll over! A friend of mine at church here in Gillette grew up in Ingomar and said the tender was the town water tank."

This is a tender from an S-2 not ans S-3. the S-3's had a semi-vanderbuilt round water bottom.

That is ODD! Never heard of such a thing. Usually there is one tender per locomotive, must be a small town. How many locomotive live there?

I recall seeing a vanderbilt tender near Colton, UT. It was standing out in the weeds, don't know what its use was for.

My last trip through the area was in 1998 and it was there then.
